Cake News is a collaboration with Grace Sydney Pham. Shown at the 500X Gallery. Emmar worked with a multilayered cake, a milk glass chalice, and a mannequin.
During the event, Emmar had a backpack projector. He would walk around the gallery and project a TV, then hand someone a microphone and ask them to tell him the news. On screen were many events Emmar had shot including a rodeo in Wyoming. People would riff and make up different news segments to this video.
The Experience
Concept
This is the cake centerpiece for Cake News. There are multiple TVs animated to circle on each layer. Each video is something from Emmar's archive of videos since the early 2000s. Music connected to it is by Grace Sydney Pham,, a song called Tokophobia.
This is the projection on a mannequin piece. In it a woman is trying to push out of the mannequin to attempt to excape. The mannequin is wearing a wedding dress., the colors were created in After Effects.
A chalice with religious or perhaps a wedding chalice. There are draw on white outlines onto the milk glass, then some lighting and blood types of animations.
The backpack video is archived here. This is the video Emmar would project. A spectator would be handed a microphone and asked to improvise a news report. Below that is a behind the scenes look at the green screen set. This was shot on an old VHS camera, to bring a grungy nostalgic effect.
